Heading to Cairns on a cruise ship? Whether you want to head out to explore the Great Barrier Reef or Wet Tropics Rainforest on an excursion, or simply want to relax and explore the city, here’s how to spend your day in Cairns.
Cairns Esplanade Lagoon
Relax at a beachy oasis without leaving the city at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon. This 4800m2 saltwater swimming pool is completely free and has both shallow and deeper parts, making it ideal for every member of the family. Dry off with a walk along the Cairns Esplanade and head to Muddy’s Playground for some family fun.
Shopping & markets
Cairns city may be smaller than its southern counterparts, but it really packs a punch when it comes to shopping. Browse little local boutiques in Oceana Walk and on Grafton St, Shields St and Sheridan St to pick up something truly unique. Cairns Central is a 15-minute walk from the cruise liner terminal and has many high street shops. Browse designer brands such as Louis Vuitton at DFS T Galleria, which is located just 550m from the cruise liner terminal.
If you are visiting on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, head down to the iconic Rusty’s Markets and browse a rainbow of fresh and funky produce and treat yourself to a bite to eat from international food stalls from all over the globe.
Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome
Go wild in the city centre and get your fix of all things furry, feathery, and scaly at Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome. Watch a crocodile feeding, learn about local reptiles, or cuddle a koala. Embrace your inner Tarzan on the high ropes courses, which includes a zip line over Goliath – a huge Saltwater Crocodile! Treat yourself to some of the best views of the city as you wander round the outside of the Reef Hotel Casino Roof.
Cairns Aquarium
Journey into the underwater world of the reef and the rainforest at the Cairns Aquarium and wander through exhibits highlighting the ecological diversity of the region. Tick some of iconic reef species off your list, such as Clown Fish, Humphead Maori Wrasse and Green Sea Turtles. Visit the onsite Turtle Rehabilitation Centre to get up close to see turtles or fuel up with sumptuous dining options at Dundees at the Aquarium.
Restaurants
No matter what kind of cuisine tickles your fancy, you’re sure to find it in Cairns. The Cairns Esplanade is a tongue-tingling strip of bars and restaurants, with everything from Italian to Thai up for offer. Sundowners with a drink are always on the cards, with Oak & Vine, Crystalbrook Rocco and Crystalbrook Whiskey and Wine offering the perfect view and cocktail pairings.
The Cairns Marina is another dining mecca, with a few iconic options that deserve a spot in your itinerary. Dundees serves up modern Australian cuisine with waterfront views, while Ochre infuses their dishes with locally-sourced ingredients and bush food.
Shore excursions
Spend your day in Cairns exploring the natural wonders of the tropics on a shore excursion. Snorkel or dive on the Great Barrier Reef or explore the utopian Green Island. Venture to the rainforest village of Kuranda on the Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and explore the Kuranda Markets and wildlife parks. Connect to culture and join a traditional owner on Mandingalbay Ancient Indigenous Tours, learn about the history of Cairns on a museum walking tour, or get an adrenaline fix on Bad Fishy Jet Boating.
