Tropical North Queensland’s rich cultural heritage shines through a vibrant calendar of festivals celebrating multicultural communities, creativity and storytelling.

The longest-running multicultural festival, the Cairns Japanese Bon Dance Festival on 15 August, brings the spirit of Japan to Tropical North Queensland. Honouring Japanese traditions through music and dance while celebrating the enduring friendship between Japan and Cairns. Visitors can enjoy traditional Bon Odori dancing, taiko drumming, Japanese cuisine, cultural performances and family-friendly activities in a vibrant showcase of Japanese culture and community.

All cultures are celebrated at the Mareeba Multicultural Festival on 29 August, while Cairns Festival from 28 August to 6 September fills the city with live music, theatre, art installations and family entertainment before concluding with the much-loved Carnival on Collins Markets.

Step back in time at the Innisfail Art Deco Festival, celebrating the town’s beautifully preserved heritage with vintage fashion, exhibitions and live entertainment on 16-20 September.

The Port Shorts Film Festival returns to Port Douglas on 24 October, showcasing outstanding Australian and international short films alongside filmmaker Q&As and awards. Film fans can immerse themselves in stories inspired by nature at the Understory Film Festival screening on 21 November, celebrating environmental storytelling through inspiring short films, workshops and community events.

Music and a film festival feature in the Outback by the Sea Festival in Karumba on 26 September to 4 October.

Foodies Delight

The Cairns Italian Festival on 23 July to 2 August celebrates the generations of Italian migrants who helped shape Tropical North Queensland through authentic cuisine, regional wines, cooking masterclasses, opera, long lunches and the anticipated La Festa Food & Wine Day.

Just days later on 6-9 August, Taste Port Douglas showcases the region’s finest chefs and producers with long lunches, degustation dinners, cooking demonstrations and premium food experiences.

The Cairns Indian Festival on 5-12 September fills Fogarty Park with colour, music, dance and authentic Indian street food, while the Babinda Harvest Festival on 12 September celebrates the region’s agricultural heritage with parades, local produce, entertainment and family fun.

Throughout the season, markets across the region offer visitors another opportunity to discover tropical produce, artisan goods and local flavours.

Relay For Life on 1 August brings communities together in support of cancer research, while runners compete in the iconic Great Pyramid Race on 1 August. Next is Run Port Douglas on 5 September, while endurance athletes can test themselves in the Ona Mission Multisport Adventure Festival on 6 September and the legendary Cardiac Challenge from Cairns to Cooktown on 20-22 September.

Music lovers are spoilt for choice throughout the season. The internationally acclaimed Australian Festival of Chamber Music makes its debut in its new home of Cairns from 24 July to 1 August bringing world-class musicians together for an inspiring program of performances that will delight all music enthusiasts.

Savannah in the Round on 8-11 October brings four days of live music to the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds including international music legend Don McLean, Australian icons Icehouse, rising US country artist Tyler Braden, Lee Kernaghan, Ian Moss, Troy Cassar-Daley, The Wolfe Brothers and dozens more performers across multiple stages.

For a different kind of soundtrack, Thunder in the Canefields brings the roar of high-performance sprint cars taking centre stage from 31 July to 8 August. This action-packed event delivers adrenaline-fuelled racing, family entertainment and plenty of excitement for motorsport fans.

The glamour of the racing season arrives with the Cairns Super Carnival on 22-29 August. Racing, fashion and celebration take centre stage with the elegance and excitement of Ladies Day, Fashions on the Field and thrilling thoroughbred racing providing the perfect excuse to dress up and enjoy a weekend at the races.

Looking for more out of this world and a fun family event in Cardwell, the Australian UFO Festival on 6-9 August embraces the town’s famous extraterrestrial folklore with quirky parades, markets, guest speakers and family fun, while AusArmourfest on 28-30 August showcases the largest collection military vehicles in Australia with historical displays and living history demonstrations.
