From the coast to the outback, cultural celebrations to sporting challenges, music and film, there’s a packed lineup of free and ticketed events to tempt you out and about in Tropical North Queensland this spring.
Don’t miss the inaugural T20 Gold Clash at Cazalys Stadium on 22 November, where cricket meets footy in a showdown featuring NRL and AFL legends including Jonathon Thurston and Joel Selwood, coached by cricket great Stephen Fleming. They’ll take on a star-studded cricket lineup featuring Usman Khawaja, Matthew Hayden and wildcard Ash Barty. Tickets are available now at goldclash.com.au until sold out!
Celebrate the many cultures of the region at the Mareeba Multicultural Festival on 29 August, with food, music, performance and a colourful street parade. Mareeba Shire is home to more than 75 nationalities and produces much of Tropical North Queensland’s fresh produce, making this a feast for all the senses.
Keeping it cultural, immerse yourself in the colour and flavour of India at the Cairns Indian Festival from 5-12 September at Fogarty Park, with music, dance and authentic Indian street food before heading south for the Babinda Harvest Festival on 12 September, celebrating the region’s agricultural heritage with parades, local produce, entertainment and family fun.
Rounding out the cultural festival circuit, head west along the Savannah Way to Outback by the Sea Festival in Karumba from 26 September to 4 October, where you can watch the sun set over the Gulf while enjoying live music and a film festival in this remote tropical outback town.
Back in the city, Cairns springs into action during the Cairns Festival from 28 August to 6 September, with live music, theatre, art installations and family entertainment. Free events include a nightly light show at the Esplanade Lagoon and the Grand Parade, complete with fireworks as Cairns celebrates its 150th anniversary. Finish the festival with a wander through the Carnival on Collins Markets on Father’s Day.
Dad’s will also love getting up close to Australia’s largest collection of military vehicles at AusArmourfest from 28-30 August, with historical displays, living history demonstrations and plenty of machinery to discover.
September is all about getting active, with Run Port Douglas taking off on 5 September offering a Half Marathon and shorter events finishing on the stunning sands of Four Mile Beach. Test your endurance at the Ona Mission Multisport Adventure Festival on 6 September in Mission Beach, or get on two wheels for the legendary Cardiac Challenge from Cairns to Cooktown 20-22 September.
For those seeking something a little more laid back, step back in time at the Innisfail Art Deco Festival from 16-20 September, where vintage fashion, exhibitions and live entertainment celebrate the town’s distinctive art deco heritage.
Film lovers have plenty to look forward to in spring, with the Port Shorts Film Festival in Port Douglas on 24 October showcasing outstanding Australian and international short films on the big screen under the stars. Then on 21 November, the Understory Film Festival celebrates stories inspired by nature with short films, workshops and community events.
Music fans, meanwhile, should make a date with Savannah in the Round from 8-11 October at the Mareeba Rodeo Grounds. Four days of live music across multiple stages will feature international legend Don McLean, Australian icons Icehouse, rising US country artist Tyler Braden, Lee Kernaghan, Ian Moss, Troy Cassar-Daley, The Wolfe Brothers and dozens more.
And when the event winds down, the fun doesn’t have to stop. Markets across Tropical North Queensland are in full swing throughout the spring season, offering the perfect chance to discover tropical produce, artisan goods and local flavours while exploring the region beyond the event.
