From June to September, the region comes alive with a series of events that showcase its rich heritage, artistic flair, and adventurous spirit all with the backdrop of the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage Rainforest. Whether you’re chasing culture, outdoor adventure, or just looking for a reason to explore the region, winter and spring are the perfect time to experience TNQ’s vibrant personality. Here’s what’s on across the next few months.
Rhythms of Culture



Tropical North Queensland comes alive with colour, music, and deep cultural resonance through a vibrant series of festivals celebrating Indigenous heritage, frontier history, and contemporary expression. The Cooktown Discovery Festival (14–16 June) commemorates Captain Cook’s 1770 landing and his pivotal meeting with the Guugu Yimithirr people. With historical reenactments, storytelling, and cultural performances, it offers a powerful tribute to both ancient traditions and colonial encounters.
The following weekend, NYX Festival (21–23 June) transforms Innot Hot Springs with a bold blend of music, fashion, and immersive art, spotlighting First Nations and multicultural creatives in a transformative space of expression.
In July, the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) (10-13 July) gathers leading and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists for exhibitions, markets, fashion, and conversations celebrating the depth and diversity of Queensland’s Indigenous cultures. An event no to be missed.
Adding even more vibrancy, Shine On Gimuy (17-26 October) lights up Cairns with projection art, dance, and music on the banks of Trinity Inlet, honouring Country and culture in a spectacular nighttime celebration.
Plus, don’t miss the Dream Aloud Cairns Trail (18 October), part of the QLD Music Trails, weaving together music, nature, and community in a multi-sensory journey across the tropical north. Together, these events form a cultural arc across the region inviting connection with stories, creativity, and the enduring spirit.
For the Foodies




Far North Queensland serves up a sizzling calendar of flavour this winter, turning the region into must-visit destinations for culinary lovers. Kicking things off, and adding a delicious dose of European flair, the Cairns Italian Festival (25 July – 3 August) brings the spirit of Italy to the tropics with lively street feasts, elegant gala dinners, pasta-making classes, wine tastings, opera, and traditional dancing.
Just days later, the iconic Taste Port Douglas (7–10 August) returns, uniting Australia’s top chefs, food artisans, and mixologists for four days of beachfront indulgence, hands-on masterclasses, and long lunches that celebrate the region’s vibrant produce.
Finally, spice things up with a cultural finale at the Cairns Indian Festival (23 August) at Fogarty Park, where aromatic street food, cultural performances, live music, and colourful dance fill the air with joy and flavour.
The Babinda Harvest Festival (1-7 September), an event that spans generations and showcases the agricultural heart of the region with a grand parade, farm to table food, tractor races and more. Whether it’s native ingredients, handmade pasta, fine wine, or sizzling samosas, this tropical taste trail promises an unforgettable winter for food lovers.
Adventures for the Wild at Heart



For those looking for the ultimate endurance challenge, the Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns (14-15 June) is a must-do, featuring a 3.8 km swim at Palm Cove, a 180 km bike ride along the Captain Cook Highway, and a run along the beautiful Cairns Esplanade.
Adventure seekers, fitness enthusiasts and spectators are spoiled this season.
The 7 Cairns Marathon Festival (13 July) offers a stunning run through the city, with marathon, half-marathon, and shorter distances framed by costal blue of the reef and greens of the lush tropical rainforest.
Buckle up for the toughest 8 seconds in sports and find out what it means to be cowboy at the PBR Cairns International (19 July).
If running is more your speed, the legendary Great Pyramid Race (3 August) offers a lung-busting scramble up Walsh’s Pyramid near Gordonvale, cheered on by thousands at its base festival. September continues the adrenaline rush with the Port Douglas Gran Fondo Festival (12–14 September), offering road cycling events along the spectacular Great Barrier Reef Drive, followed by Run Port Douglas (13 September), combining tropical scenery with community energy.
From Eco-Conscious Fun to Rural Revelry




In Cairns, sustainability takes centre stage at Ecofiesta (22 June), a free, family-friendly celebration of green living at Munro Martin Parklands. Visitors can expect hands-on workshops, eco-markets, local eats, and vibrant performances all with a tropical twist. For those craving rural charm, the Malanda Show (27–29 June) offers woodchopping, cattle judging, and country fun on the Tablelands. Meanwhile, the Laura Races and Rodeo (27-29 June) bring Cape York’s remote communities together for bronco riding, country music, and outback spirit under wide-open skies.
Racing in the Tropics


Glamour, racing, and tropical vibes collide at the dazzling Cairns Super Carnival (15-23 August) with fashion, fillies, and festive flair. Nine unforgettable days of style, champagne, glamour and heart-pounding horse races. Think high tea, trackside thrills, and luxe events under palm-lined skies. Whether you’re there for the fashion or the finish line, it’s the ultimate excuse to dress up and let loose. Cairns is calling and it’s racing in heels!
Local Favourites and Festival Fun




Cairns comes alive from 16 – 18 July with the Carins Show and continues with the Cairns Festival from 29 August to 7 September a 10-day celebration of life in the tropics. With live music, art installations, pop-up performances, and a strong community vibe, it’s an annual favourite in the regions calendar. It kicks off with the Grand Parade and Fireworks on the Esplanade a night of family fun that’s not to be missed. The festival wraps up with Carnival on Collins (7 September), where the Cairns Botanic Gardens and Collins Avenue transform into a bustling market and performance space. Featuring over 200 stalls, local food, roaming performers, and arts and crafts, it’s a vibrant finish to the festivities and great place to buy dad a Father’s Day gift and lunch.
Savannah in the Round (9-12 October), experience the true Aussie outback with camping under the stars at Savannah in the Round. Enjoy epic live bands each night surrounded by wide-open skies and the spirit of the North Queensland bush.
Reel in the Action Up North


The season is off to a flying start with the Weipa Fishing Classic (6–8 June), one of Australia’s most remote and legendary fishing competitions. Set against the dramatic Gulf coastline of Cape York, this festival draws thousands for three days of barramundi fishing, big prizes, fireworks, and live music. It’s more than just a competition it’s a true outback celebration.
Offbeat Adventures & Cosmic Celebrations

If your travel style leans a little left of centre, Tropical North Queensland delivers in wonderfully unexpected ways.
For those drawn to the stars, the Cardwell UFO Festival (August) offers an extraterrestrial twist on the usual seaside fair. With alien-themed parades, expert talks, and lots of fun, it celebrates the town’s curious connection to the cosmos.
Meanwhile a little further north, Innisfail quietly boasts a beautiful collection of Art Deco architecture that is celebrated at the Art Deco festival (14-21 September). It’s the perfect town to explore on foot with camera in hand; dive back into the roaring 20s, watch the grand parade, attend the festival and enjoy the fashions of yester year.
